A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 8, at the Eagle Point National Cemetery for Gordon Jerald Read, who died November 30 at age 79.

Mr. Read was born April 16,1927 in Le Mars, Iowa to Cecil and Leone Walker Read. He enlisted in the Navy and was a veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict. He and his partners owned a sawmill in Northern California after leaving the service. Returning to Medford, he worked for Olson Lawyer Lumber Company and Boise Cascade until his retirement in 1989. He subsequently worked for various maintenance companies up to his death.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting and restoring antique engines and tractors. He belonged to Branch #9 and Branch #141 of the Early Gas Engine and Tractor Association. He also was a member of the Southern Oregon Historical Society and the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society. He attended Sacred Heart Church.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Schatz Read; son, George Read; daughter, Nancy Hartley; daughter-in-law, Kim Read; son-in-law Doug Hartley; grandson, Andrew Read; step-grandchildren, Vincent Orantes, Erik Staack Christiansen, and Kirsten Hay; brothers, Paul, Stan, Rodney, Michael, and Tom Read; and sisters, Joan Williams, Kathy Lucas, and Mary Sue Buchwald.

Remembrances can be donated to the Salvation Army.
