Charles R. Fort

Charles R. Fort passed away at his home on January 4, 2007, surrounded by his family.

Charles was born to Ray and Eda Fort on June 4, 1910 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Catheral High School and worked in the growing automotive and racing business as a machinist.

He met Sigrid Unger and they were married in 1936. They soon had a daughter, Barbara. Charles went to work at the New Ordnance Plant manufacturing parts for the war effort, which briefly took them to New York before returning to Indiana.

The family moved west to Los Angeles in 1942. There he worked for Mitchell Camera machining fine parts for the movie cameras used in reconnaissance aircraft.

The family moved to Oregon in 1944, first to Canyonville, then finally to Medford, which would remain their home. Since 1948, they lived on Dark Hollow Road.

Much to their surprise, Charles and Sigrid had three more children, Joe, Jim and Erik, between 1954 and 1959. Barbara married and raised her family nearby on Dark Hollow. Later, son Joe would raise his family nearby.

Charles and Sigrid played a large part in the early lives of all their grandchildren.

In Medford, Charles worked in several automotive and trucking machine shops: Colliers, Littrels and Withams, where he retired in 1972.

Charles had a ready humor, was a great story teller and had an incredible memory. He was loved by his wife and family. Charles was a member of Sacred Heart Church. His wife Sigrid passed away in 2000 after 63 years of marriage.

Charles is survived by his daughter and three sons; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
