Shirley Hedrick

Shirley Hedrick

Shirley Hedrick, of Shady Cove, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2007. Shirley was born on January 9, 1929, the youngest child of Ralph and Emma Brooks of Coalville, Iowa. As a child she loved to play in the wooded hills of Coalville with her brothers and cousins, attend Saturday matinees at the Fort Dodge movie house, and help her older sister, Evelyn (Aunt Sis) at the family owned restaurant.

She attended Fort Dodge Senior High where she met Nathan McGuire, her first husband, and father of her three children. In 1970, while working for Iowa State Employment Service she met Art Hedrick. Art and Shirley were true soul mates and had 27 wonderful years of marriage before Art's death in 1998. After Art and Shirley retired from the Iowa State Department in Des Moines, Iowa, they traveled the country together in their R.V. They enjoyed "full-timing" for — years before they settled down at Leisure Days in Shady Cove, Oregon. During the thirteen years that Shirley lived at Leisure Days she made many very close friends whom she loved dearly. Her home became a welcome retreat for her friends and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They knew they could always find a great home-cooked meal, a mean game of Mexican Train, or a rousing night of "Texas Hold Em". Shirley loved to sing. Her clear soprano voice never faded and her love of music was a joy to us all. She will be remembered for her clean and comfortable home; her sweet, gentle nature; her patient spirit that always had time to listen; her inquisitive mind; and her deep love for family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her son, Mike (Vickie) McGuire of Kansas City, Mo., her daughters, Christina (FR Patrick) O'Grady of San Dimas, Calif., and Linda (Ralph) Spangler of Bandon, Ore, her six grandchildren, and her four beloved great grandsons.

A memorial service will be held for Shirley at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 26th at Eagle Point Veteran's Cemetery. A pot luck luncheon will follow at the River House in Shady Cove. For further information call Linda Spangler at 541-347-9109
