Josephine Helen Michaels

Josephine Helen Michaels died March 12, 2007 in her home in Ashland, Ore. Born Josephine Helen Fesi on Sept. 10, 1920 in Little Falls, N.Y., the eldest child of Sylvester and Mary Fesi. Josephine married her childhood sweetheart, Joseph Michael Grosadonia, who preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1998. Although they both had grown up in Rochester, their hearts lead them to Southern California where they spent the rest of their marriage, living in Altadena and later in Long Beach and Mission Viejo.

Josephine enjoyed being a mother and was a sewer of many an outfit and costume for her children. She loved tending her roses and always had fresh flowers from the garden in her home. She enjoyed entertaining, as well as her activities with The Garden Club of Altadena, The Fidelia Club of Pasadena, and her work with Children's Home Society. She loved to sing and would break into her favorite songs at any moment. There was always a pot of spaghetti sauce on the stove. Jo and Joe loved the international travels they were able to take in retirement, as well as many Elderhostel adventures in the U.S. And for a time, much to the surprise of their children, enjoyed a full immersion in square dancing! After her husband's death, Jo joined her three daughters in Ashland, moving to the community of Mountain Meadows, while reluctantly leaving her sister and her son and his family.

Josephine is survived by her five children, Lynn Michaels and her husband, Donald Montgomery, Jude Michaels, Larry Michaels and his wife, Melina Michaels, Jeanette Butler and her husband, Scott Butler, and Lorayne Michaels; her six grandchildren, two great grandchildren; her sister, Nina Berry and her husband, Robert Berry; and her ever totally devoted cat, Pepper. She was preceded in death by her brother, Peter Fesi, in addition to her husband. A graveside memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice at Ashland Community Hospital.

We most sincerely want to thank all of the amazing care givers who provided loving care to Jo over the years; and thanks to you wonderful staff at ACH Hospice and Home Health. The family thanks you all for your kind ministrations.

Arrangements: Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
