The funeral for Archibald Archie Carlyle Martin will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2007, at the Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Interment will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland. Officiating will be Pastor Rod Howell of the Central Neighborhood Church, Phoenix.

Mr. Martin, 97, of Phoenix, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at home. He was born November 28, 1909, in Republic, Kans., the son of Adeline and John DeWitt Martin. He worked for the U.S. Department of Forestry building roads in the DeAngles Forest, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the San Bernardino Mountains all in southern California. He also supervised CCC camp crews and large forest fire crews.

On December 5, 1931, in Monrovia, Calif., he married the former Florence Glennora Davis who preceded him in death in 1969. In 1944 he moved his family to an 80 acre ranch in Ashland where he operated a dairy, later raised beef stock and hay, and worked for Talent Irrigation District. On April 14, 1973, he married the former Lyda Koenig Haynes who preceded him in death in 2003.

Archie, a man of integrity and love for his family, enjoyed working with animals, playing the harmonica, fishing and hunting deer and elk. He was known as an old fashioned storyteller. Archie and Lyda moved to Phoenix, Ore. in 1996.

He is survived by a daughter, Glennora Marti Arnold of Phoenix, Ore.; four step-children, Sonny Haynes of Phoenix, Ariz., Rena Bennett of Central Point, Ore., Patsy Sakraida of Williams, Ore., and Don Haynes of Jacksonville, Ore.; his brother, Merlyn E. Bud Martin of Oak Grove, Calif.; sister, Cecelia M. Schleusner of Concord, Calif.; grandchildren, Reba L. McClary, Randy L. Arnold, John D. Martin, James R. Martin, and Jill P. Estes; and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters, and in 1990 by his son, Ray Bud Martin.
