Dolores Evelyn Lester
Dolores Evelyn Lester
Dolores Evelyn Lester, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, loving sister and friend died on April 6, 2007. We are all so blessed to have known and loved this special lady and will miss her so very much.
Dolores was born to F.M. and Alma Shontz on May 22, 1918 in Minot, N.D. but lived most of her life in California. She lived for several years and attended grade school in Fergus Falls, Minn. She moved with her family to Klamath Falls, Ore. where she finished grade school and started high school. Then she moved to Weed, Calif. where she graduated from high school in 1936. After she graduated from high school, she met Fred W. Lester and they were married in Davis, Calif. on September 15, 1939, where Dolores attended college.
Fred, Dolores, and their children lived in Weed and southern California until 1948 when they moved to Gold Hill, Ore. where they had relatives nearby. They operated a grocery store for nearly 15 years and were active in the community. Dolores was a member of Eastern Star and Rebekahs, a Cub Scout den mother for her son's troop, a 4-H leader, and a room mother at her children's school. In the early 1950s Dolores and Fred built a summer cabin at Diamond Lake, Ore. because her family had spent time there in the 1930s. Many family members and friends have since spent many wonderful days at the cabin, right up to the present.
In late 1962 the family sold the grocery business and returned to California, settling in Santa Rosa. Fred died suddenly in 1971. Dolores loved Santa Rosa and continued to live there and worked as an accountant, until she retired in 1996. She led an active life with her many friends, traveled to the Far East, Europe, South America, Mexico and around the U.S. She took classes at Santa Rosa Junior College, and volunteered at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for many years, and at the Welfare League. She was a member of Santa Rosa United Methodist Church from the time she moved to Santa Rosa. Due to declining health from Alzheimer's disease she moved to Chico in 2001 to be near her son and his family.
She is survived by her son, Rick and his wife, Joanne Lester of Chico; daughter, Vicki Misner and her husband, Howard of Central Point, Ore.; daughter, Luree Ketcham and her husband, Douglas of Bright, Ind.; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Trudy Shontz of Rogue River, Ore.; and her sister-in-law, Luree Shontz of Davis, Calif. She had six grandchildren, David, Kimberly, Chris, Lori, Cassie and Jackie; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Howard Shontz.
As per her request no service will be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity.
