Flora Lucile Cunningham McIlroy, 92, passed from life to Life on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at her home in Central Point, Ore. Flora was born on April 1, 1914 in Spencer, Iowa to Hollister ("Oscar") and Mary Anna Patterson Cunningham. Flora lived with her parents, siblings, grandparents, and grand-uncle William Edison Patterson in Spencer, Iowa until the family relocated to Anaheim, Calif. in 1927. Flora had many fond memories and happy stories of living her childhood life with extended family.
In 1929 Flora met Rufus Black McIlroy, Jr., and then married him, two years later on December 1, 1931 at the Christian Church in Santa Ana, Calif. In the early years of their marriage the couple made their home in the Inyo Valley of California working a mining claim. Later they relocated to Avenal, Calif. where Flora gave birth to her two children, Barbara Joy and Richard Bruce. As well as being a devoted mother, homemaker and mining claim owner, Flora was an entrepreneur - - working as partner and executive in McIlroy Farm Equipment, a business she and her husband, Rufus, started and owned until their retirement in the late 1980s. After her husband's death in 1992, Flora moved to Oregon with her daughter, Barbara, where they resided together in Medford and then in Central Point, until her death.
Flora was preceded in death by her parents Hollister ("Oscar") and Mary Anna Patterson Cunningham; her brother, Hollis William Cunningham; her sister, Virginia Ellen Cunningham Beauregard; her grandson, Michael Alan Runyon; and her husband of 61 years, Rufus Black McIlroy, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Joy McIlroy-Aldrich of Central Point, Ore.; her son, Richard Bruce McIlroy of Hanford, Calif.; her granddaughters, Janeane Lea Runyon of Medford, Ore., Mei Li Hope Aldrich Kronenfeld of Wilton, N.H.; and grandsons, Ronald Bryan McIlroy, Christopher Scott McIlroy, and Russell Patrick McIlroy, all of Handford, Calif. Flora's long life was further blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Meredee, Hannah, and Aimee Runyon Croppy, and Joshua and Jack Aldrich Kronenfeld, Christopher Eugene and Sara Janeane Runyon, and Riley Brennan McIlroy, and three great-great-grandchildren, Justin and Daisy Cropper Huff, and Kylann Cropper Swift. For many years Flora presided as dearly beloved matriarch of five living generations of her family.
A memorial celebration of Flora's life was held at the family home, in Central Point, Ore. on Sunday, April 1, 2007, the 93rd anniversary of Flora Lucille's birth. Pastor Alicia Speidel presided. Burial was held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Coalinga, Calif. on Saturday, April 7, 2007. Memorial contributions may be made to Medford First Christian Church, Medford, OR 97504.
