Matilda M. Hendricks Luther, 86, of Medford, died Saturday, November 10, 2007, at home. No services are planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 1172, Medford, OR 97504.

Mrs. Hendricks Luther was born Matilda Barney in Mound City, Il., on March 2, 1921.

In 1974, she graduated from Allan Hancock College, in Santa Maria, Calif., with AS degrees in Business Administration, and Supervisory Management. In 1997, at 76, she graduated Summa Cum Laude` from Southern Oregon University, with a BA in Communication. She was honored by American Association of University Women as outstanding Senior woman in the Communication Department, and was the oldest SOU graduating student in the Class of 1977.

She was employed as an accountant for 42 years in Illinois, California, Washington, and Louisiana. In 1983, she retired as Accounting Supervisor of Santa Barbara County Health Care Clinics, in Calif., and moved to Ashland. On August 9, 1986, she married Martin Luther Jr., who survives.

Mrs. Hendricks Luther was active in community service. In Ashland, she served as President of the Republican Women's Club and treasurer of Seniority Unlimited, a community based recreational organization for Seniors. In Medford, she served on the city's budget committee for three years, and was a member of the Senior Advisory Council for eight years, three years as Chair. She was twice Treasurer of the Citizens committee to Pass the City of Medfords Police Levy. She was also a past president of the Oregon Association of Area Agencies on Aging Advisory Council Chairs.

She enjoyed golf, cooking, crossword puzzles, rock collecting, and raising orchids.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women, and a member of the SOU Chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, includes two sons, Gregory R. Hendricks and his wife, Sonya, of Downpatrick, North Ireland; James B. Hendricks of Los Angeles, Calif; 2 grandchildren, Ellen and David Gustapson, of New York City; and two step daughters, Midi Henderson, of Sheridon, and Marta Stephens, of Klamath Falls.
