Jane H. Carpenter

Jane Carpenter was born June 12, 1915, in Pennsylvania, and died in her sleep at age 92, on Tuesday, December 4, 2007. Jane was raised in Egypt by missionary parents, returned to the US and graduated from Monmouth College of Illinois, and subsequently studied social work at the University of Chicago. She married Dunbar Carpenter in 1942, and moved to Medford, Oregon in 1946, following World War II, when Dunbar took over operation of a pear orchard and farm that belonged to his great uncle. They had three children, Karen C. Allan, Dunbar Scott Carpenter, and Emily Carpenter Mostue; and five grandchildren, Robin Allan, Alison Mostue, David Mostue, Dunbar Nathan Carpenter, and Joseph Carpenter.

Jane Carpenter's many community activities included working to establish a juvenile court and children's mental health services in Jackson County in her early Medford years. She worked as part of the state and local League of Women Voters, Jackson County Community Action Agency, Oregon State Board of Higher Education, Britt Festivals, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She was a trustee of the Carpenter Foundation for 45 years and president for 30.
