"Ike" Walker

William L. Walker, 87, of Medford, Oregon passed away peacefully on January 10, 2008 at his home in the Rogue Valley Manor. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Conger-Morris, Medford Chapel. Don Hildebrand will be officiating. Reception will follow at The Rogue Room, Skyline Plaza at the Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Ike was born on March 15, 1920, in Gold Hill, Ore., to Alva A. Walker and Icie Bailey Walker. He was raised in Gold Hill and returned from the Army Air Corp in 1945 with his new wife, Mary Lou. Ike obtained both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees at the University of Oregon and during that time he and Mary Lou had two sons, Rob and Dan. They moved to Southern California in 1954 where Ike started his teaching career. Teaching also took the family to Santa Rosa, California, where they made their home for almost 50 years. He retired from education administration in 1978 and they returned to Oregon in 2003 to live at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore.

Ike and Mary Lou were devoted to their two sons, Rob, and Dan. Their lives revolved around their grandchildren and they considered Rob's wife, Sherry and Dan's wife, Kate their daughters. Together, they were instrumental in starting the first Little League in Santa Rosa. Ike was a firm but fair teacher and administrator and provided inspiration to many, many students over the years. It was hard to go anywhere without running into some prior student eager to thank him for past guidance. Ike loved to learn new things and he loved to read. He was also blessed with the ability to tell a good story. His kind and gentle nature will be missed by everyone.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou; his parents, Alva and Icie Walker; his brothers, Acel, and Delos Walker; and nephew, Dick Walker. He is survived by his son, William Robin Walker and his wife, Sherry; grandchildren, Mandy, Kelly and Tony and son Daniel Vic Walker and his wife Kate; and grandsons, Jerome and Neeraj. Survivors also include his sister-in-law, Pearl Walker; nephew, Arlie Walker; and nieces, Dixie Herrmann and Linda Turner; as well as their spouses and a large extended family.
