Elmer Walter Kammel Sr.

Elmer Walter Kammel Sr. was born in Newark, N.J. on August 11, 1924 to Oscar Kammel and Laura Fulcher. Elmer passed away peacefully at his home in Medford on February 21, 2008 with his loving family by his side.

Elmer was raised in Newark, N.J. where he graduated from high school. He joined the Army Air Corp. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater as a B-24 Bombardier.

During his service he met Dora Mazick. Elmer and Dora were married May 4, 1946 in the Territory of Hawaii.

Elmer and Dora moved back to Elmer's home town, Newark, N.J. Elmer completed his military tour with the 15th Fighter Group as a 1st Lieutenant, July 1947.

Elmer became employed as a police officer in Newark, N.J. He and his family moved to the Territory of Hawaii, and then to Southern California. He was employed by the Orange County Sheriff's Department in 1957. He retired as a Sergeant in 1974.

He and his family retired to Southern Oregon and lived in the Rogue River area. Elmer and Dora were long time members of the Rogue River Chapter of the UFW. He enjoyed many years camping and fishing with his family and friends.

Elmer is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dora, and six children, Elmer Jr. (Shirley), of Medford, Sandra Kocher (Denis), of Merlin, Pamela Gibson (Joe), of Rogue River, Laura Miller (David), of Cache, Okla., Katherine Allen (Mike), of Rogue River, and Debra Franko (Wally), of Grants Pass. Elmer shared in the celebration of 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Service for Elmer will be Tuesday, February 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Eagle Point National Cemetary.
