Charlotte Louise Lee Doty

Charlotte Louise Lee Doty, age 90, died quietly at her home in Ashland, Ore., On February 22, 2008. Charlotte lived a long and active life, with many good friends across the country who love her and will miss her very much. She was born in Portland, Ore., On September 24, 1917 to John Alden Lee and Charlotte Brooks Lee as the youngest of four children.

Charlotte attended St. Helen's Hall in Portland, graduating from the High School in 1936 and the Junior College in 1938. She graduated from Oregon State University 1941 with a B.S. in bacteriology. She earned a Masters degree in Education from San Jose State University in 1965.

In 1942 she married Maxwell S. Doty. They had four children; Diana, Georgia, David and James. They moved to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1950 when Max joined the Botany department of the University of Hawaii. When they divorced in 1956, Charlotte and their four children returned to the mainland.

She lived in Palo Alto, Calif. for 18 years where she taught science at Castilleja School before going to work for Amelco/Teledyne. A large portion of her job was working with the photo optics, developing a photo resist process by which electric circuits could be printed on silicone wafers. In 1973 she moved to Concord, Mass., where she lived for sixteen years. She returned to the west coast in 1989, settling in Ashland, Ore.

She was active in the Unitarian Universalist Church and served on the board of both the First Parish Church in Concord, Mass. and the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, in Ashland, Ore. Charlotte was also active in the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, and her book group. She spent many happy hours gardening, reading, and observing nature especially birds, insects, flowers and people.

She was preceded in death by brothers. David, and Gilbert, and her sister; Deborah. She is survived by her four children, three grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charlotte enjoyed socializing with her friends and family. At her request we will not mourn her passing, but celebrate her life, and then have a party. The celebration of her life will be held at the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Fellowship, in Ashland, at 2:00p.m. on March 8, 2008. The party will be at the church immediately after the service.
