Elaine Otte Mather Gaudette

Elaine Otte Mather Gaudette

Elaine Otte Mather Gaudette, 86, ended her long battle with Parkinson's disease when she passed away peacefully at the home of her caregiver on Jan. 20, 2009.

Elaine was born in Logan, Utah on Aug. 11, 1922, the daughter of Alma Maria Augusta Bjorkman Otte and Hans Frederick Otte. She was the last surviving member of that family, having been predeceased by her parents; and her siblings, Leona Jackson, Alfred Otte, Oscar Otte, Myrtle Saxton, Ethel Jensen and Leslie Otte.

She grew up in Logan, Utah, and Evanston, Wyo., graduating from Logan High School in 1940. She married E. Leon Mather in the Salt Lake temple on Sept. 3, 1941, and they were blessed with two children. They lived in many cities in northern Utah and California over the next 15 years. In 1956 they moved to Sparks, Nev., where she lived for 32 years. Sparks and home were always synonymous to her.

Elaine was widowed in 1960 and went to work for Sierra Pacific Power Company. She was a customer service clerk for 5 years, and an executive secretary for 21 years, retiring in 1986.

A very special marriage to John Worobey lasted only 5 years from 1978 to 1983 when his life was cut short by cancer. They met at the dance and were avid dancers. After her retirement, she married Edgar Gaudette. They traveled the Western United States in their RV for a few years, lived briefly in Hemet, Calif., then settled in Medford, Oregon for their final years. Edgar passed away in 2006.

Elaine is survived by her children, Karyn (Gene) Magin, of Medford, Ore., Stephen (Carolyn) Mather, of Morganton, Ga.; stepson, Thomas Gaudette, of Garden Grove, Calif.; grandchildren, Dean (Tamra) Mather, Dawn (Mark) Bercow, Jimmy (Morgan) Roberson, Stephen (Kristine) Roberson, nine grandchildren; and — great-granddaughter. She is also survived by eight stepgrandchildren and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren. Elaine was predeceased by her parents, siblings, and spouses as listed above, and stepdaughter, Linda Carvalho.

Elaine was cared for during the last eight months of her life by Debbie Lester, of Edgewood Home Care. We will be eternally grateful to Debbie for the efficient care and especially for the warmth and love bestowed on Elaine and her family during that time.
