Charles Chuck Richard Kinney

Chuck Kinney, 80, of Ashland, passed Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Skylark Memory Care in Ashland.

Chuck was born July 25, 1928 in Medford, Ore., to Ted and Hilda L. (Hanson) Kinney. He was raised in Climax, Ore., attended schools in Eagle Point and Ashland, graduating from Ashland High School in 1946. After four years in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to Ashland and found the love of his life, Mary E. Newman, living in Grants Pass. They were married at the Newman United Methodist Church in Grants Pass on March 15, 1952.

Chuck worked for Jorgenson's Dairy for 20 years, delivering milk products to downtown Medford restaurants and grocery stores. Retiring in 1974 to run his business, Chuck Kinney At Your Service excavation, Chuck was better known as Elmer the Clown riding his bike backwards, sitting on the handlebars, in many of Ashland's 4th of July and Medford's Pear Blossom parades.

Chuck was a Past Master (1973 ) of the Ashland Masonic Lodge; a member of the Alpha Chapter #1 Order of the Eastern Star; a Royal Arch Mason, Siskiyou Chapter #21; the Hillah Temple Shrine, participating in the Shrine Clown unit; and a life member of Ashland B. P. O. E. #944.

Chuck was preceded in death on his son, Charles R. Dick Kinney, Jr., July 30, 2005 and his sister, Frances Jeanette Overand, March 20, 2007. In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by his daughter-in-law, Patti Kinney, of Virginia; his daughter, Christine A. (Tim) Jones, of Phoenix; and son, Ronald L. (Kathy) Kinney, of Talent; brother, Ted (Rayda) Kinney of Big Lake, Alaska; 12 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating Chuck's life will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 2:30 p.m., at the Ashland Elks Lodge #944 with a reception following. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 3101 S. W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239
