Martin Stewart Grier, 80, former resident of Ruch, passed away at his home in Paonia, Colo., Saturday, Aug 22, 2009.

Visitation for Martin will be held Monday Aug. 23, 2009 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia, Colo. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, at the Bible Center Church 1117 3rd St. Paonia, Colo., with the Rev. Paul Millermon officiating. Internment will follow at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Paonia.

Martin Stewart Grier was born in Paonia, Colo., April 25, 1929 to Eugene Martin and Margil (Williams) Grier. Martin was raised in Paonia, Colo., Vernal, Utah, Tracy and Patterson, Calif. Martin graduated with the class of 1947 from Patterson High School in Patterson, Calif., where he was active in football, basketball playing on two all-conference championship teams and track where he won a state championship in the 440 yard run. He was active in Boy Scouts earning the highest honor, Eagle Scout, and later served as a Scout Master. He went on to further his education at Modesto Jr College and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Martin began farming in 1951 in Patterson, Calif., where his four children were born. He later moved to Ruch, Ore., and later to Hereford where he raised cattle and farmed. In 1987 he moved to Paonia, Colo., where he became a realtor.

Martin married Hertha M. Dalla Bona on April 28, 1975 in Ruch, Ore. In April of this year they celebrated 34 years of marriage.

Martin enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He loved gardening, flowers and especially vegetables, enjoyed camping, fishing, rockhounding (including cutting and polishing) and cutting wood. In his late 60's he learned how to play the guitar.

As a teenager He committed his life to Christ and was active in youth ministries throughout his life. He also served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He was an active member of Bible Center Church in Paonia and leader in the Awana club. He was also a member of Gideons International; past president of Jackson County Stockmans Association; chairman of Jackson County Farm Bureau; a past member of Upper Applegate Grange; Lions Club; past president of and member of Paonia Chamber of Commerce.

Those honored to have shared in his life, are his wife, Hertha, of Paonia, Colo.; two sons; Craig L. (Joni) Grier, of Benton City, Wash. and Clayton F. (Stacie) Grier, of Ruch, Ore.; two daughters; Chris (Mark) Peters, of Bend, Ore; Cindy Cameron, of Medford, Ore.; and stepdaughter, Manuela A. (John) Huculak, of Pacifica, Calif. He is also survived by 10 wonderful grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Margil Wright.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory. Memorial contributions can be made to Bible Center Church Building fund or the Alpine Hospice services.
