Shirley Palmer Stephenson Maddox

Shirley Palmer Stephenson Maddox

Shirley Palmer Stephenson Maddox passed away peacefully on April 15, 2010, in Jacksonville, Ore. She was born in Jacksonville, Fla, on March 17, 1932, the first child of Edna Palmer and Harry Blair Stephenson.

Shirley grew up in the Miami area, graduating from Coral Gables High School. She studied at Florida State University and majored in nursing at Emory University. Her education was cut short after she married and began a family. She returned to school at the age of 50 and earned her long-desired nursing degree, with honors, from San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas.

Shirley raised her family in Atlanta, Ga., and Nassau Bay, Texas. She was an active community volunteer, serving as a paramedic for the Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. She was elected to two terms on the Nassau Bay City Council and was active in the Democratic Party. Her professional career included work as a paramedic and as a registered nurse.

Traveling the world was a passion for Shirley. On a cruise through the Panama Canal she met her soul mate and the love of her life, Geoffrey Maddox. Geoff, a native of Australia, was an entertainer, singer and comedian on Shirley's favorite cruise line. They married and spent five wonderful years together traveling, dancing and laughing. With pride, Shirley became a dual citizen, making Australia her home until Geoff's death in 1997.

In 2003, a stroke robbed Shirley of her ability to easily communicate. In spite of this, she kept her feisty spirit, her love of people and the ability to laugh at life's foibles. She moved to Jacksonville Ore., in 2005, to live near her daughter. Shirley's family is eternally grateful to the many caring people who loved and showed kindness to Shirley during this stage of her life.

She is survived by brother, Harry Stephenson; four children, Patricia Bowcock (Conde Cox), of Jacksonville, Ore., Cheryl Bowcock (David Couch), of Austin, Texas, Stephen Bowcock, of Austin, Texas, and Noel Linter (Philip), of Chambersburg, Pa.; her grandchildren, Stephanie and Michelle Linter (Pennsylvania), and Andrea Bowcock (Texas).

Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved, Geoff; her parents; and the father of her children, Charles Bowcock.

The family will hold a private memorial service on the Oregon Coast. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Southern Oregon Humane Society (2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501) or a charity of your choice.
