Joyce D. Winkler

Joyce Diane Winkler passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Providence Medical Center in Medford, Ore., under the loving care of her husband John R. Winkler, Sr.

Joyce was born October 20, 1932, in Gering, Neb., to Carl and Florence Genz. She moved with her parents and brother to the Pacific Northwest around 1940.

In 1959, she married Harold F. Jensen, who passed in November 1983. In June 1985, Joyce married John Winkler, Sr.; June 2010, marked their 25th year of marriage.

Joyce graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1954, with a B.A. in Education. She received her Masters of Education from Oregon State University in 1960, and began a wonderful career as an educator in Santa Barbara, Calif., Parkrose, Portland, St. Helens and Redmond, Ore. Joyce began as a high school counselor in 1977, in Oakland, Ore., where she earned the 1981 Outstanding School Counselor of Oregon award.

Joyce began assisting her college bound students in selecting a college and finding financial assistance and formed the Educational Connection in 1982. Her commitment to her students drove her to excel in her expertise; she toured colleges and worked hard to help students find schools where they could also excel. Joyce retired in 1992, from Phoenix High School to pursue the Educational Connection on a full time basis.

Joyce received numerous honors by the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard for her efforts in obtaining ROTC scholarships and Academy Appointments. She has also published four handbooks to assist students in preparing for their college applications.

Joyce was a Phi Beta and Delta Kappa Gamma, who was involved in P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and her church Zion Lutheran. She played the organ, loved the beach and shoes and enjoyed her time in Gold Beach, Ore. and Yuma, Ariz.

Joyce is survived by her husband, John R. Winkler, Sr.; daughter, Gail Ann Jensen-Stephens, of Waco, Texas; son, John R. Winkler, Jr., of St. Helens, Ore., grandchildren, Joyce and Carla Stephens and Sophie Winkler; nieces, Mary Jay (grandniece,s Helen & Jordan), of Jacksonville, Fla., and Helen Ward (grandnephews, Scott & Chris), of Waitsfield, Vt. She was preceded in death by her grandson, John Stephens; brother, Clyde D. Genz, of Boca Raton, Fla.; father and mother, Carl and Florence Genz, of Salem, Ore.; and son, Bradley E. Jensen, of Portland, Ore.

Joyce was a loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, mentor, friend but most of all wife. She will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 516 W. 4th (4th & Oakdale) in Medford. A private interment will be held on Friday, September 10, 2010, at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
