Anton 'Tony' Gerwick
Anton "Tony" Gerwick, 89, passed away January 3, 2011, at Ashley Manor, in Medford, Ore. Tony was born on December 13, 1921, to Wendelin and Catharina (Katie) Gerwick, immigrants of Germany, in Hebron, N.D. Orphaned at the early age of 10, after his mother died in 1929 and a car accident killed his father in 1931, Tony lived at Boys Town for a time. Three days shy of his 21 birthday, Tony enlisted in the United States Army, on December 10, 1942. Tony served his country well and spent about seven months as a POW in Germany. His older brother, Joseph, helped liberate the camp while Tony was encamped there. After the war, he moved to Roseburg, Ore., where he met and married his wife, Mary, in 1952. Tony worked and retired from Medco Sawmill in Medford. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and woodworking.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and George; and two sisters, Ann and Bertha. He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Teckla and Ida; two children, Linda, of Hawaii, and George, of Utah;, two stepchildren, Terry, of Medford, and Shirley, of Medford; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A private graveside service was held Monday, January 10, 2011 at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford, with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either:
