Ira Ponder, 86, of Medford, Ore., passed away January 12, 2011. He was born to Andrew Jackson Ponder and Mary Harriet Cornelia Smith, on May 19, 1926. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947 from Oklahoma with his wife, Faye Halstead, and lived here the rest of his life.
He was married to Faye for 57 years, until her passing in 2000. They had five children. Ira remarried in July of 2001, to Grace Lafever.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 - 1947, during WWII. His division fought in Germany in 1944.
He worked at Ally Brother's for 27 years, Wilson's for 15 years, Medco for 10 years, and Timber Products for three years. His dream was to come to Oregon and work in a saw mill, which he did for 55 years! Ira enjoyed hunting with his sons and sons-in-law, fishing the Rogue and reading.
Ira is survived by his wife, Grace LaFever; son, Roger Ponder; daughter, Iris Reagan; sister, Jessie Summerhill, of Texas' twin brother, Edgar Ponder, of Hydro, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Faye Ponder; son, Robert Ponder; daughters, Linda Hanson and Glenda Miller.
