'Papa' George Sherba

"Papa George," as he was known by many in our community, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the age of 92. He was born on February 14, 1919, in Lamberton, Pa. Drafted into the army in 1944, George received several medals during his tenure, including a purple heart, before being honorably discharged in 1946. Valentine's Day gained even greater significance for George when he married his wife, Regina, on February 14, 1946. It was then that George and Regina moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he worked for over 47 years for an electrical insulation company as a purchasing agent. In 1995, they moved to Medford, Ore.

George loved bowling and golfing. He brought home many trophies over the years, but was always most proud of his hole-in-one. He was an avid bingo player at the Medford Senior Center, and active in the community. He enjoyed being a member of the Purple Heart Association and Knights of Columbus, where he had taken his 4th Degree. He was a longtime and beloved volunteer at Wilson Elementary School, where he acquired the name "Papa George."

George touched the hearts of many people in our community and will be deaply missed. In addition to Regina, his wife of 53 years, George was also preceded in death by his grandson, Brian Michael Homar.

George is survived by his two daughters, Carole Homar (Mark) of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Valerie Wheeler (Lawrence), of Medford, Ore.; three grandchildren, Lisa Prouty (Kevin), of San Diego, Calif., Sarah Wheeler and Zachary Wheeler, both of Medford, Ore.; and five great-grandchildren, Nicholas Prouty and Noah Prouty, both of San Diego, Calif., Brian "Mikey" Homar and Skylynn Homar, both of Maricopa, Ariz. and Jacinda Homar, of Eugene, Ore.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 30, 2011 at Shepherd of the Valley Church, 600 Beebe Road, Central Point, OR 97502.

In lieu of flowers, family is requesting memorial contributions be made to Knights of Columbus c/o Shepherd of the Valley Church, 600 Beebe Road, Central Point, OR 97502 .
