Jane Coverstone

November 13, 1933 - March 9, 2011

Jane Pattsner Coverstone was born November 13, 1933, in Port Townsend, Wash., the daughter of Arthur Pattsner and Helen Homes Pattsner. Jane was raised in Port Townsend and graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1951. She began college at the University of Washington that same year. The following year, Jane transferred to Oregon State University to pursue a degree in Home Economics with emphasis in early childhood education. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree from OSU in 1956.

While attending OSU, Jane met fellow student Dale Coverstone, of Medford, Ore., at a sorority/fraternity event and later married him on March 23rd, 1958. Jane enrolled in graduate school at OSU and completed graduate coursework in early childhood development. However, she chose to focus on her own children and family and left school before completing her graduate research project and receiving her degree.

Jane and Dale lived briefly in Eugene and Portland, Ore., before settling in Medford and Jacksonville, Ore., to raise their family. It was there that Jane worked with colleagues to open a pre-school program at the First Presbyterian Church in Medford, a program that continues today. Jane was very active in church and community organizations in Medford and Jacksonville and remained so throughout her life. Her leadership included serving as a deacon and an elder for the First Presbyterian churches in Jacksonville, Ore., and Port Townsend, Wash., and serving on the Board of Directors for a national Alzheimer's Association, in support of the disease that claimed the life of her mother. In 1987, Jane moved with her husband to Mukilteo, Wash., and later to Port Townsend, Wash. Dale passed away in 2003. Jane later moved to the Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg, Ore., in 2008, where she resided and remained active in community activities.

Jane will be sorely missed by friends and family, but her spirit of caring, kindness, and leadership will be remembered by all who knew her and will undoubtedly be carried on by her children and grandchildren.

Jane lost her battle with cancer on March 9, 2011. She is survived by her three children, Michael Arthur Coverstone, of Applegate, Ore., Susan Diane Mooney, of Beaverton, Ore., and John Aaron Coverstone, of Shoreview, Mn.; as well as four grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at Attrell's Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011. Additional info may be found online at
