Reverend Robert J. Gillespie

Robert Joseph Gillespie, III, was born in Millville, N.J., on August 19, 1928, to Robert Joseph Gillespie, Jr., and Ray Bell Stinson Gillespie. His early education was in Millville, and he graduated from Millville Memorial High School. He received his bachelor of arts from Bloomfield College in New Jersey, attended Princeton Seminary, and graduated from Andover Newton Theological School in 1956. He was ordained to the ministry on September 18, 1956.

He served Presbyterian Churches in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Wilmington, Del.; directed Garden Valley Neighborhood House in Cleveland, Ohio; served as Associate Pastor at Third Presbyterian Church, in Rochester, N.Y.; and directed the Southeast Ecumenical Ministry, in Rochester, N.Y. In 1976, he moved his family to California, where he served on the staff for the Golden Gate Mission Area for the Synod of the Pacific, and, from 1981, he was the General Presbyter for the Presbytery of the Redwoods, until his retirement in 1992. At that time he was designated Executive Presbyter Emeritus. In retirement he served as interim pastor and chaplain with Marin Aids Interfaith Network, in California.

He was an active member of the Presbytery of the Cascades, serving on several committees. He worked at the Food Bank at First Presbyterian Church, and was chairman of the religious activities at Rogue Valley Manor. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and colleagues across the country.

Bob was married to the Reverend Mary Wright Gillespie and they raised two children, Gail E. Gillespie and Thomas W. Gillespie. Tom is married to Veronica Gillespie, and their two children are Jonathan and Jenna Gillespie. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Gillespie; and his sister-in-law, Linda; nieces, Alix Gillespie, Shawn Kahn, and Sherry Arnes; a cousin, Doris Cervino; and great-nephews and a great-niece, in New Jersey and Florida. He also is survived by a large extended family of in-laws. A sister, Janet Miskelly, preceded him in death.

The memorial service for the Reverend Robert J. Gillespie, who died in Medford, Ore., on August 5, 2011, will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 20, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, 8th and Holly, Medford.

Memorial gifts should be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 85 South Holly Street, Medford, OR 97501, in lieu of flowers.
