Donald Ambrose 'Pops' Bedell

February 20, 1916 - October 20, 2011

Don Bedell, long-time Eagle Point, Ore. resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2011. He was 95.

Don was one of six children born to John Hiram and Beatrice Dewhirst Bedell, of Lawrence, Mass. Don was a native of Coppercliff, Ontario, Canada. Later, his family returned to their home, Bayonne, N.J. At the age of four, he traveled with his family from the East Coast to California, where his father, chief chemist for Tidewater Associated Oil Company, was transferred. They settled in the company village of Avon, near Martinez. Don attended San Jose State College and the University California at Davis. He was one of five siblings attending college at the same time. After college, he was employed in Martinez, Calif., by the Associated Oil Company until early 1940. Don took a position as an engineer with the United States government and spent the next two years as a fire inspector on the Panama Canal. After World War II began, Don returned home in order to volunteer in the United States Marine Corps. He enlisted on December 7, 1942, and spent the next year as a rifle range instructor at Camp Mathews, San Diego, Calif. He then was transferred to the Pacific Theater. Having made the rank of corporal, he participated in many battles and was extremely proud to fight for his country.

After the end of the war and arrival of peace, Don returned home in early 1946. He returned to work as a fireman for Associated Oil Company. During his youth and early adult life, Don spent much of his free time with his brothers, helping friends on their ranch near Clayton, Calif. He gained a passion for ranching and hunting, and had always planned to some day own his own cattle ranch.

After enjoying a long period as a bachelor, and enjoying the role of favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews, Don met his wife, Beverly, in 1954. They were married on April 30, 1955, in Reno, Nev. Don and Beverly moved to Eagle Point, Ore., on March 31, 1968. With Beverly and their three children by his side, they moved to their ranch, allowing Don to reach his dream. He was really proud of his wife, children, the ranch, and his many special family members and friends. In order to provide an adequate income for his family, Don worked for Cascade Wood Products from 1969 until his retirement in 1985. Don continued to stay active in the daily activity of the family ranch until his death.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his daughter-in-law, Linda Bedell; his parents; his brothers, John Bedell, Ken Bedell, and Bill Gott; and his sisters, Helen Fryer, and Marjorie Bedell. He is survived by his son, Gary Bedell (special daughter, Tauni Adamson); daughters, Kim Bedell, and Jill Bedell; sister, Beatrice Russell; grandsons, Christopher Lynch, and Jason Spear; granddaughter, Angie Davis; great-granddaughters, Megan and Madi Davis; great-grandsons, Braden and AJ Spear; and many favorite nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 24, 2011, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., at Siskiyou Memorial Park, with gravesite service to follow at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jackson County 4-H and FFA Junior Livestock Auction Committee.

Don, his firm handshake, warm smile, and kind words will be missed by all.
