Mary Allene Elrod
On December 10, 2011, Mary Allene Elrod, 91, of Medford, Ore., peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by her loving family.
The fourth of seven siblings, Allene was born on November 22, 1920, in Gridley, Kan., to Al and Sylvia Bumgardner. Following graduation from Madison High School, she traveled by train to Medford, where she married her high school sweetheart, Frank Elrod Jr., on May 29, 1938. They had three children, sons, David and Gregg; and daughter, Sandra.
Allene delighted in her garden, cooking and baking, and was an avid fisherwoman, spending countless hours at the lake, the river and the ocean with her trusty rod and reel. She made sure her grandkids were well trained in the use of a flashlight for finding earthworms and were able to bait their own hook! Her sweet pickles are legendary, as is her peanut butter fudge, fried chicken and salmon croquettes. She welcomed the challenge of any type of card game or puzzle, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and many other hobbies. She enjoyed watching baseball games, cheering on her "Cubbies" every season.
Allene was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; and her son, Gregg. She is survived by her sisters, Luanne and Jackie; her children, David and Sandra; grandchildren, Shelly, David, Kim, Allen and Steven; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Ricky, Chelsea (Elrod), and Chelsea (Harrington-Wenger); great-great-granddaughter, Ella; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration of Allene's life will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, 4:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Medford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Providence Hospice, 2033 Commerce Dr., Medford, OR 97504.
