October 16, 1914 - January 4, 2012

Lorena Elizabeth "Betty" Stripp Girdler, 97, of Stockton, Calif., passed away quietly in her sleep on January 4, 2012, in Stockton.

Betty's career was as an English and Journalism teacher and Guidance Counselor at Los Gatos High School. She served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women's educational organization; belonged to Church Women United and the Presbyterian Church; and sponsored several children in developing countries, improving their lives and futures. She split her time among Elk Grove, Poway, and San Francisco, Calif., and Ashland, Ore. In earlier years she lived in Los Gatos, Calif.; St. Albans, W.V.; and Tallahassee, Fla.

Betty traveled extensively in the United States and abroad in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. She was a writer and avid reader; people were amazed at her vast knowledge and excellent memory.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Ellen Girdler Breslauer, of San Francisco, Calif.; three grandchildren, Michael T. Aronson, of Durango, Colo., William B. Aronson, of Portland, Ore., and Katherine Aronson Berland, of Columbia, Md.; and five great-grandchildren. Her other daughter, Susan Girdler Aronson, the mother of Betty's three grandchildren, passed away in 2002. Betty lived with the Aronsons for several years. She also left many nieces and nephews and their offspring.

Always being of service to others, Betty donated her body to the University of California for medical research and teaching. A memorial service will be held at the Elk Grove Congregational Church (UCC), 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 19, 2012. Contributions can be made in her name to Pearl S. Buck International, 520 Dublin Road, Perkasie, PA 18944, www.psbi.org or to a favorite charity.
