James 'Jim'

Albert Maffett

Jim passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday January 31, 2012.

Jim was born on December 31, 1936, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Harold and Alice Maffett. He was the eldest son of three boys. He had a love of music early on and especially enjoyed playing the trumpet. Jim worked at Rogue Community College for 12 years and, in 1974, started the music program there.

He joined the Army when he was 17 and was in the Army Band traveling all over Europe for four and half years.

He taught school for 43 years and continued playing his trumpet non-stop with his band and other bands. He played in the symphony band in Oregon, the Ashland City Band, and several bands in Las Vegas, Nev., while living in that area. The trumpet was his true passion.

He loved his family, his church and his music.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Debbie Matlock, and Mandy Close; sons, Mark Maffett, and Clete Shields; his mother, Alice Maffett; two brothers, Mike and Bill Maffett; and 10 grandchildren, Hailey, Hayden, Mark Jr., Jeff, Sarah, McKenzie, Hanna, Tom, Sam and Will.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the Central Neighborhood Church, 4777 S. Pacific Hwy., Phoenix, Ore. Private interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Jim requested contributions may be made to the church.
