Dennis Livingston Saylor

6 March 1944 - 24 February 2012

Ashland, Oregon

At 1545 hours on 24 February 2012, Dennis Livingston Saylor lost his battle with primary lateral sclerosis, and slipped into his Savior's arms with a quiet sigh while surrounded by members of his family.

Born 6 March 1944, Denny graduated from Conemaugh Township High School, in Johnstown, Penn., in 1962. He joined the United States Army in 1966. He earned his bachelor's degree in education from Methodist College while in service, and continued on to Officer's Candidate School. He worked in logistics and military intelligence as an instructor for the Officer's Advanced Course, and as chief of the ULCC in Rome, Italy. He was a Viet Nam veteran, and was awarded the bronze star for his service in-country.

After retiring from the Army in 1990, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, Denny worked as a defense contractor for several years while earning his master's degree in education and human resource development. He briefly taught middle school in the area of Newport News, Va., and later developed and opened a homeless veteran's shelter with his wife, La Dawna, and several other dedicated veterans who cared so much for their own broken warriors.

Denny brought La Dawna back to the Rogue Valley in October, 1999, where they ultimately settled on a hilltop in Ashland. This is where he lived his final days.

Denny leaves wife of 28 years, La Dawna; daughter, Sharyn (Russ) Young; sons, Scott Allen (Kathie), Steve (Lindsey) Scott Geoffrey (Gloria) and Michael (Rachel) Sinks; sisters, Ruby (Lynn) Poole, and Lindy (Dick) Lloyd; brother-in-law, Jerry Kucera; 23 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four faithful companions, Ricci, Lace, Maxi and Bandy. He was preceded in death by mother, Audrey; father, Victor; and brother, Victor.

We will miss you, Sweetheart, Father, Grampa, Friend and Mentor.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 2, 2012, at 3:30 p.m., at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland Street, Ashland, OR, followed by a potluck at the family home, at 230 Mobile Drive, Ashland, OR. For information or directions call 541-482-6176.
