Wallace 'Wally' G. Hicks

On May 11, 2012 Wallace "Wally" Hicks passed away at his home in Medford, Ore. He was 70 years old. Wally was born to Leon and Anna Lou Hicks on January 7, 1942 in Casa Grande, Ariz., but was raised in Santa Cruz, Calif.

He graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1959, where he was a standout football player and Student Body president.

Wally attended University of California, Berkeley on a football scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Criminology in 1963.

After college Wally began his career as a lumber sales manager for saw mills and later as a wholesale lumber distribution salesman. Over the span of his career he worked for Spalding & Son's in Grants Pass, Ore., was the owner of Gold Creek Lumber in Jacksonville, Ore., and most recently, Weaver Forest Products in White City, Ore.

In March 1982 Wally met his future bride, Robin Wyatt, and they were married on July 16, 1982. With the marriage to Robin, Wally gained two children, his daughter, Jennifer (Spang) Jacobs, and his son, Steaven Spang.

Steaven introduced Wally to soccer and before long Wally began his coaching career. Wally, alongside Mike Massei, coached a travel team called the Medford Marauders. When Steaven was a freshman at South Medford High School, Wally became the J.V. boys soccer coach. After only one year with the J.V. team, Wally was offered the head coaching position for the varsity boys.

Wally coached the varsity boys from 1990 to 1997. Over the course of his seven-year tenure, his teams went 107-17-2 overall, won six District Championship Titles, and one State Championship in 1997, and he was voted S.O.C. Coach of the Year for 1995.

Wally's other passion was golf. He was a member of the Rogue Valley Country Club where he golfed several times a week. He enjoyed teaching his grandson, Jordan, to golf and was very proud when they played this past March and Jordan out-drove him on two of his drives.

Wally was an excellent woodworker and evidence of his talent can be found all through his and Robin's previous home in Jacksonville, and their current home in Medford, Ore. His last big project was to build a 10'x10' fort in his grandson's backyard for his ninth birthday.

Wally is survived by his wife, Robin Hicks; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Greg Jacobs, of Medford, Ore.; son, Steaven Spang, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Betty Hicks, of Stevensville, Mont.; and grandson, Jordan Jacobs, of Medford, Ore.

He was preceded by his parents; niece, Sandy; and his first grandson, Jonathan Jacobs.

A celebration of Wally's life will be held Friday, May 18, 2012, 1:00 p.m., at the Table Rock Fellowship, 3610 N. Pacific Hwy.

Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society or Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Arrangements are being handled by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, (541) 772-7111.
