Geraldine 'Gerry' Valerie Jones
Geraldine "Gerry" Valerie Jones, 92, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2012, at Ashwood Senior Home in Ashland, Ore. She was born January 9, 1920 in Ashland, Ore., to Gerald H. and Grace C. Wenner. Gerry once said in an interview from 1956, "I am just another one of the Joneses, born Geraldine Wenner, have lived in Ashland almost all my life. My family consists of husband, Delbert, better known as "Tiny" and three "ripsnortin" sons, namely Dennis, Timothy, and
Gerry did not meet Tiny until she was out of high school and into business college. They were engaged a few months after they met but because of the war, it was about three years before they could be married on November 4, 1942.
Together they enjoyed many years serving the Ashland Elks Lodge #944, traveling to many cities around the United States, attending conferences and meetings. They also enjoyed trailer camping, traveling, fishing, and working in their yard.
Family meant everything to Gerry, she had a love for life and always tried to share that love with family and friends. Her family includes their three boys Dennis (Connie) of Redmond, Ore.; Timothy (Chris) of Phoenix, Ore., and Roger of Lakeview, Ore. She and Tiny were married for fifty-six years before his passing in 1998.
In 1963 Gerry decided to try her hand at working and got a job at Sears in Medford, working in a variety of departments. She then managed the Ashland Catalog store until it closed, going back to Medford as Department Manager till her retirement in 1974.
In her retirement, Gerry started each day with a three-mile walk. Her daily route from her home on Morton Street, included passing through the campus of SOU. There, she often greeted the students and wished them Good Luck on their finals. She was convinced that all of her walking is what had kept her in good health and brightened her general outlook on life.
Gerry was a charter member of two extremely wonderful organizations; Chapter BN PEO since June of 1940, serving as President in 1953, followed by many other positions and committees through the years; Ashland Community Hospital Auxiliary since 1968, where she worked as chairman of the blood pressure clinics held at the hospital; and two other retirement centers in Ashland till her health no longer allowed her to. She was very proud of being the oldest living member of both of these organizations.
Gerry was preceded in death by her sister, Gertie Hess. She is survived by a sister, Gloria Page of Roseburg, Ore. Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Ashland United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations to Ashland Hospital Auxiliary and/or Ashland Home Health and Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
