John Weisser Lehnhardt
John Weisser Lehnhardt, 97, born February 27 1916, in Garden Grove, Calif. went to join the Lord and his family in Heaven on January 17, 2014.
John is survived by both of his children, John Steven Lehnhardt, of Applegate, Ore. and Patricia Cunningham, of Jacksonville, Ore. John was a loving grandfather to six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. John came from a family of eleven siblings and is survived by a sister, Ruth Pinneau of Northridge, Calif. and a brother, James, of Medford, Ore.
John was married to Virginia Lehnhardt, from 1938 until 1997 when she predeceased him. The Lehnhardts moved to Oregon in 1976 to be with their children and grandchildren.
John was a native Californian, and he was voted Most Valuable Player on the Santa Ana Dons Football Team in 1935. He was offered over 18 athletic scholarships and chose to attend the University of Mississippi. He graduated from Ole Miss, and went into coaching and teaching in Flora, Miss. After two years of being a principal, coach and history teacher, his father became ill and John took over the operation of the family 40-acre farm in Santa Ana, Calif. He and his family farmed walnuts, oranges, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, lima beans and asparagus.
Eight years prior to his passing, John and his Garden Grove High School sweetheart, Elma Mae, became an inseparable pair until his death.
John was an avid fisherman (even last summer), loved to raise orchids, as well as his vegetable garden, and was a football fan forever. He taught both of his grandsons to fish, and they love the sport as much as he did.
