Jay was blessed to have an extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and a very special younger sister, Jean. He had wonderful memories of time spent on his grandparents' farm near Corvallis and hunting trips with his Dad, Uncle Jim, Uncle Terry, and other friends.

Jay attended schools in Portland, Ore. and graduated from Grant High School in 1959. He served four years active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. After his honorable discharge, he returned to college and graduated with a business degree from Southern Oregon College (now SOU). While at SOC, he met Katherine Larson, also a student, and on July 12, 1969 they were married. After living in Portland for a few years, they decided to beautiful Southern Oregon and have resided in the Jacksonville/Ruch areas since 1973. Jay and Kathy spent weekends camping, fishing, and enjoying the great natural beauty of this part of the world, particularly the Oregon Coast.

Jay began working as a store clerk at the Grance Co-Op store in Central Point, Ore. in 1973. From there he worked his way up to various management positions and eventually became Retail Sales Manager. He retired in 2003. During his work years he was a mentor to emlpoyees, setting an example of strong work ethics. Jay was known for his strong moral character and honesty. Jay admired and respected military veterans of all wars. Throughout his life, many of his favorite friends were from the "older generation".

Jay is survived by his wife, Katherine (Kathy) Powell; sister, Jean Haley; and his Aunt Toots (Juanita Taylor). He was preceded in death by an infant son, Edward C. Powell, and his parents.

Per Jay's request, no funeral will be held. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Crystal Lake Cemtery in Corvallis, Ore.
