Ruth Hoover Kaye

Ruth Hoover Kaye passed away Friday, February 6, 2015 in Medford, Ore. at the age of 101. Ruth was born in 1913 at the family farm west of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, to Jay and Cora Hoover, American pioneers to this Canadian province.

Ruth grew up on the prairie, riding her horse, "Buck", and attended a one-room school. She graduated from Weyburn Collegiate Institute in 1930 and from Moose Jaw Normal School in 1931. In 1932, at the age of 18, she began her teaching career at Tagg School, Sask. Ruth traveled by train with her mother to Medford, Ore. in 1937 to visit an aunt and permanently stayed in the Rogue Valley. On September 10, 1938, she married Richard Kaye in Medford's First Christian Church.

In 1939 Ruth graduated from Southern Oregon Normal School with a teacher's certificate. She taught grades one through eight at Derby School near Butte Falls, from 1939 to 1940. The following year, Ruth taught at Agate School, north of Medford. While raising three children, she had teaching assignments throughout Southern Oregon. In 1955, Ruth graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Education degree at Southern Oregon College at the age of 42. She then taught seventh grade at Howard School, and starting in 1958, at Medford's new Wilson School. She moved to Union, Ore. in 1966, where her husband worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Ruth taught nine more years in Union until retirement in 1975, and then moved back to Medford.

Ruth was a very social person and continually made many life-long friends. She had been a member of the First Christian Church and Methodist Church. Over the years she loved to hike, square dance, read, and work crossword puzzles. She greatly enjoyed playing cards and could still win at the age of 101. Ruth had a passion for live theater, the outdoors and travel, visiting many countries, and U.S. national parks.

Ruth is survived by her three children, Glenda Thompson of Central Point, Ore., Glen Kaye (Harriet) of Salem, Ore., and Bruce Kaye (Paula) of Sisters, Ore.; her brother, Ted Hoover (Margaret) of Vancouver, B.C.; sister-in-law Margaret Hoover, of Kelowna, B.C.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Kaye; brothers, Glen Hoover and Carl Hoover (Elsie); and son-in-law, Bill Thompson.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Fountain Plaza, 1441 Morrow Rd., Medford, OR.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ruth's memory to a favorite charity.
