Thomas H. Smith
Thomas H. Smith, 96, passed away February 18, 2015 at Fern Gardens in Medford. He was born September 24, 1918 in Tacoma, Wash. to Charles Thomas Smith and Myrtle Marie Clark. Tom was raised in Kellogg, Idaho and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1936. He married Patricia Stebbins, his high school sweetheart, December 17, 1938. They were married for more than 75 years. Pat passed away November 24, 2014.
In 1941, Pat and Tom moved to Bremerton, Wash. where he worked in the naval shipyards. Tom was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and spent two years in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Tom and Pat moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947, settling in Medford. In 1955 they moved to Central Point where they raised their family.
Tom was employed by the State of Oregon as a Weighmaster from 1953 until his retirement in 1980. During his retirement, Tom was a busy Grandpa, train watcher, and gardener. He also volunteered for the First Methodist Church in Medford.
Tom is survived by his son, Doug Smith (Suzy); daughter, Janet Smith Kelley (Keith); four grandsons; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Arlene Yohner of Rapid City, S.D., Elsie Beninato of San Jose, Calif., and Barbara Anderson (Harold) of Nampa, Ind.
Pat and Tom will be inurned together at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
