Roland Stuart Westgate Sr.
Roland Westgate passed away November 5, 2015 in Ashland, Ore. He was born September 29, 1935 in Pittswood, England and served in the British Army from 1955 to 1957.
Roland was an exceptional craftsman who could envision, create, and build anything he set his mind upon. Most impressive was the 35-foot Ferro-cement sail boat that he built with his friend, John Goertzel in the 1970s. It was a project that took five years to complete and resulted in many memorable adventures enjoyed by Roland, his sons, John, and many friends.
Roland was also an early pioneer in the 1960s counter-culture movement that encouraged a “back-to-the-land” lifestyle and a sustainable “hippie” movement. He spent a few years living and working with the late Dr. Jensen at the Hidden Valley Health Ranch in Escondido, Calif. Dr. Jensen is considered to be the “father” of the natural health movement, was a prolific author, and health practitioner of “Nature Cure” medicine. He had a profound impact on Roland’s life.
Roland went on to become one of the early founders and builders of a communal collective that would become known as “Magic Forest Farm” located in Cave Junction, Ore. He spent many “happy, hippie” years working the land, building structures and communally raising his children. When he moved to Ashland, he became a roofer and was known for his high-quality work and reasonable prices.
In his later years, Roland enjoyed spending time with his life partner, Nancy Botti at their home in Ashland where he farmed their land, worked on various building and carpentry projects, went hiking and biking, and visited with their friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Madge Westgate and his stepfather, Edward Westgate.
Roland leaves behind his life partner, Nancy Botti; his sons, Roland Stuart Westgate Jr. and Michael Dean “Smokey” Westgate; his daughter-in-law, Jane Welch-Westgate; his grandchildren, Alexander James Westgate, Collin Stuart Westgate, and Rachel Jasmin Westgate; his former wife, and mother to his children, Summer Raven; and many wonderful friends.
A memorial service, officiated by his sons, Roland and Michael Westgate, will be held from noon to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Pioneer Hall, Lithia Park, 73 Winburn Way, Ashland, Ore.
