Carolyn Joy McCallister
Carolyn Joy McCallister, 86, of Sams Valley, Ore. passed away November 26, 2015 at her home. Carolyn was born in Duluth, Minn. December 14, 1928 to Eric and Hildur Eklund.
The last of seven children, Carolyn spent much of her childhood on her family’s farm in Barnum, Minn. In 1945, Carolyn’s family moved to Medford, Ore. She graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1946, and then quickly secured a job as a telephone operator at Pacific Northwest Bell.
That same year, she met Gene S. McCallister at a dance. After dating for two years, they were married June 23, 1948 at the First Presbyterian Church of Medford. Together, Gene and Carolyn raised three children in Fern Valley. Weekends were spent with the family, skiing at Lake of the Woods, attending church, and taking kids to numerous other activities.
In 1990, Carolyn retired from the U.S. West Telephone company. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Phoenix, taking part in every crafting and cooking project that she could.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gene; her son, Steve; and her parents and siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie Slaughter and son-in-law Jim; her son, Paul McCallister and daughter-in-law Pamela; her grandsons, Ryan and Sean; her granddaughters, Laura, Winter, Amber, Polly, and Stephanie; and numerous great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2015 at Siskiyou Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix, Ore.
