Gerald 'Jerry' George Mattey

Gerald “Jerry” George Mattey, 75, passed away December 3, 2015, due to heart failure, but surrounded by his loving family at Providence Medical Center. He was born October 9, 1940 to Joseph Mattey and Fern Fairbanks in San Francisco, Calif. He married Betty Walstead Lenz November 28, 1981.

Jerry was a long time resident of southern Oregon and attended North Medford High School where he earned his GED in 1958. He went on to earn an AAS in Automotive Technology from Rogue Community College in 2000. He worked as a sawmill foreman and superintendent for 29 years at Delah Timber Products, Medco. He also served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1963 to 1965.

Jerry was a self-taught mechanic and could build a car, and the motor, from top to bottom. He loved stock car racing and began racing at the Posse race track in Medford in 1968. He won many races in car #51 and was a three-time track champion during his over 30-year racing career. He was an avid NASCAR, NFL and Oregon Ducks fan.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his sister, Carol Robertson (Jim) of Central Point, Ore.; his daughter,  Sherie    Astorga (Javier) of Pottersville, Mo.; his daughter, Kathy Mattey of Colusa, Calif.; his stepdaughter, Sheri Muzzioli (Paul) of Grants Pass, Ore.; his stepdaughter, Sinda Jones (Greg) of Central Point, Ore.; his stepson, Scott Lenz (Leigh) of Shady Cove, Ore.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a niece, nephews and several cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 18, 2015 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. A celebration of life will immediately follow at The Meadows Community Center, 555 Freeman Rd., Central Point, OR.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Rogue Community College Foundation, 3345 Redwood Hwy., Grants Pass, OR 97525 – the Jerry Mattey Automotive Scholarship Fund.
