Christopher Drew Winchell
Christopher Winchell, 53, of Gladstone, Ore., passed away December 22, 2015, surrounded by those he loved following a battle with terminal lung cancer.
Chris was born in Cheyenne, Wyo. and grew up in Ashland, Ore. He attended Ashland High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He completed six years of military service aboard the USS Iowa during the Desert Storm conflict.
A longtime resident of Portland, Ore. and the surrounding area, Chris worked as a knowledgeable and highly skilled technician and trainer for 25 years. He worked for several local companies, most recently “Solutions YES," where he was highly respected, and loved by management and co-workers.
Despite being unmarried and never fathering any children, Chris was a dedicated family man; a devoted son; and a kind, generous brother. Following the deaths of his father Roy and his stepmother Lindy, he helped to raise and care for his younger sisters, Hallie and Joelle. He continued to assist his siblings, nieces, and nephews throughout his life. He was always there for his family and friends, in any capacity necessary.
The family offers their sincere gratitude to the staff and volunteers of the Providence Home Health Palliative Care. Their dedication to providing quality care over the last days of Chris’ life was a heartwarming blessing to him and to the entire family.
Chris is survived by his stepfather Jerry Nebel of Seattle, Wash.; his siblings, Shawn Winchell (Michele) of Bandon, Ore., Guy Winchell (Karen) of Vancouver, Wash., Dena Paulsen of Bandon, Erick Winchell (Samara) of Central Point, Ore., Caroline Rackley of Gresham, Ore., and Hallie Winchell Williams and her partner Patrick of Beaverton, Ore.; his nieces, Ashley Eldridge, Kymberly Winchell, Jeneveve Winchell, and Zoe Winchell; and his nephews, Davin Winchell and Jorden Richards.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Winchell; his mother, Jo Lyon; his stepmother, Lindy Winchell; his brother, Joseph Winchell; and his sisters, Danielle Winchell and Joelle Winchell.
A military memorial service and interment will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 8, 2016, at Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Rd., Eagle Point, Ore. 97524. Flowers and remembrance cards are welcome, and memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. All who knew Chris are invited to attend.
