Erma Flora Haughawout Boothby

Erma Boothby, 92, Bellingham, Wash. passed away peacefully at Hospice House, Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in the presence of her family. Erma was born in Potlach, Idaho and grew up in Marshfield, Coos Bay, Ore., the sixth of seven children.
She graduated Marshfield High School in 1942 and attended St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing in Pendleton, Oregon where she received her R.N. in 1945. Erma married Thomas Boothby in 1945, and they had four children. Erma's nursing career included private, office, and hospital nursing. She was a Head Start, berry field, and Red Cross disaster nurse. She ended her nursing career at age 69 in Costa Rica, where she was a Peace Corps volunteer for two years. She participated in The Nurses Health Study for over 30 years.
Erma was a Brownie and Cub Scout leader, PTA president, volunteer in the public schools, and spent a summer with her family on a fire lookout. She was also a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, Ore.
She is survived by her children, Catherine Smith (Jay) of Grangeville, Idaho, Margaret Leonard (Mike) of Vancouver, Wash., Brian Boothby (Ruth) of Medford, Ore., and Barbara Boothby, Bellingham, Wash.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Erma was preceded in death by her grandson, Paul.
A celebration of her remarkable life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Birchwood Presbyterian Church, Bellingham, Wash.
