Mary Elizabeth Swinnerton
Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Swinnerton passed away May 23, 2016 in Ashland Ore. at her home.
Betty was born January 16, 1915 to Harry F. and Ina May Turner in Portal, North Dakota. She grew up on a farm in Valley, Neb., attended college, and became a music teacher. She met her future husband, Fred when they were teaching at the same school in Illinois and they were married June 6, 1947.
She enjoyed singing, and she sang in church choirs for more than 80 years until her eyesight failed. She also enjoyed quilting in her retirement and helped found the Congregational Church’s quilting group, which produced quilts for over 20 years.
She and Fred moved to Ashland in 1989 and found a home here with a true community of friends and a church they supported and that supported them. Betty was a loving mother and grandmother, volunteered for many organizations over the years, and became a vital part of the community. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her children, Gail Engblom, Peter Spring, John Swinnerton, and Mark (Judy) Swinnerton; and her grandchildren, Charlie Engblom, Ian Engblom, Amanda Spring (Victor Nash), Erin Swinnerton, and Jamie Swinnerton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Swinnerton in 1991 and her grandson, Steven Spring in 2002.
A memorial service will be held ar 1:00 p.m. June 4, 2016 at the Congregational Church 717 Siskiyou Boulevard, Ashland, Ore.
