John Robert Watson

John Robert Watson, born September 7, 1923, came to rest July 17, 2016 at age 92. He was born in Rochester, Minn. to Roy and Laura Jane Watson.

John was a lifelong football fan, having played himself in high school, where he also set state swimming records. John enjoyed books and learning. He wrote poetry, played piano by ear, and especially enjoyed playing cards, particularly bridge, pitch, and poker.

John attended the University of Minnesota, subsequently receiving his M.D. degree from its Medical School in 1946. He completed a fellowship at the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minn., although his time there was interrupted for his service in the Korean War as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. John had earlier served as an apprentice seaman in the U.S. Navy.

In 1959, John followed his medical school friends, Donald McGeary and Eugene Meyerding, to the Rogue Valley. Dr. Watson co-founded the OB-GYN Clinic with Dr. Bud Emig, and practiced medicine in Medford, Ore. until his retirement in March of 1986. By John's count, he delivered more than 8,000 babies during his medical career. John was active in his community, participating in Medford Rotary clubs and as a member of Medford School District 549C’s board. He enjoyed lunches and cards as a member of the Rogue River Valley University Club.

John was a member of the Congregational Church for many years. He was a loving father and grandfather of John "Jack" Watson (Pam), Matt and Doug; Robert Watson, Kate and Megan; Charles Watson (Karin), Tom and Peter; James Watson (Marlece), David, John Patrick, and Michael; and Jane Blythe (Chris), Carrie and Annie. In addition, he is survived by eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

His daughter, Ann Watson, and his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth "Libby" Watson, preceded John in death, as did his brother, Roy Watson, Jr. and sisters, Jane Duncan and Margie Drosos.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Medford Congregational United Church of Christ. A reception will immediately follow at the Rogue Valley Manor, Siskiyou Plaza, Rogue Room. Remembrances may be made to the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, the Rogue Valley Manor Health Center Fund, or the Watson Nursing Scholarship Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.
