Anthony 'Tony' Lee
September 2, 1926 - July 21, 2016
Tony Lee, 89, passed away July 21, 2016 at Avamere at Three Fountains in Medford, Ore. He was born Sept. 2, 1926 in Bisbee, Ariz.
He served in the U.S. Navy and aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Essex in WWII from 1944 to 1946, after which he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he met and married Shirley Anderbery in 1948. Tony and Shirley had three children, Ronald, Sandra, and Dennis.
Tony was known for a lot of things, including the ability to sell anything to anyone; it was rumored that if someone stood still long enough at one of his garage sales, he could get a good price for them too. After selling appliances and furniture for 25 years at Sears in Southern California, Tony retired in 1970 and moved north to Oregon, where the family bought and ran the Hyatt Lake Resort near Ashland from 1971 to 1976. Any one of Tony’s six grandchildren have been led to believe that their diaper was once changed atop the resort’s pool table at one time or another, even if they were born after the resort was sold.
After selling the resort, the Lees moved to Medford, where Tony and his family ran the motorcycle race shop Moto Motion from 1976-1978. After leaving Moto Motion, but keeping its iconic, orange-and-white Ford F-100, Tony and Shirley remained in Medford, where Tony worked mainly at Marrs RVs, selling recreational vehicles and anything else sitting around the lot.
Among other hobbies, Tony enjoyed snowmobiling and teaching his sons to work on cars. He was always known for his camping trips with elaborate campsite lighting; his fishing trips, since most days he’d be the only one coming back with a catch; his holiday tamales, which were shared with family, friends, and even the good folks at Albertson’s; and, of course, his jokes. In later years, he was active with the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is sorely missed.
Tony is survived by his children, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. (ret.) Ronald Lee, of Bellbrook, Ohio, and his wife, Patricia; Sandra Gilbert of Medford and her husband, Doug; and Dennis Lee of Medford. In addition, he is survived by six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Madeleine Carreon of Lake Forest, Calif. and Genevieve Toledo, of Anaheim, Calif. Tony was preceded in death by his first bride, Shirley, in 1995; later wife, Ramona (Kincaid), in 1998 and his partner, Alice Haight, in 2013. He was also preceded by brothers, Manuel Lee, Mike Lee, and Raymond Lee, and sisters, Julie Duron and Trinidad Carreon.
A graveside funeral service for Tony will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2016 at Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to a worthy veterans’ charity of your choice.
Arrangements in care of Conger-Morris Funeral Directors of Medford.
