Marlene Barrett

June 14, 1941 - August 12, 2016

Marlene Barrett, 75, died peacefully August 12, 2016 due to complications from chemotherapy. Marlene was born June 14, 1941, the daughter of Russell Garris and Leona Boice in Murray, Iowa.

Marlene spent most of her childhood in Grants Pass, Ore. and there she met and married her husband, “Irish Mike” Barrett, November 17, 1956. They raised three children and settled in Medford in 1979. They shared a wonderful life of 60 years together and Mike was by her side holding her hand to the very end.

Marlene was a beautiful and loyal wife, mother, and friend. She was known for the unconditional love she offered her family, and her relentless encouragement for each member to chase their dreams. Marlene embraced life and pursued her own passions, bringing order to her every day and loved finding a good bargain.

Marlene was an avid reader, had an insatiable love for movies, and found great joy in creating intricate designs through coloring, which she often enjoyed doing with her grandchildren. Marlene also touched the lives of many who received her beautifully crocheted afghans, creating hundreds over the years that were shared with family, friends, and members of the Medford community.

Marlene participated in the Griffin Creek Home Extension club and assisted with the coordination of the annual Pear Blossom run held by the Southern Oregon Runners club in Medford each year.

Marlene is survived by her husband, Mike Barrett; sons, Steve Barrett (Cheryl) and Rick Barrett; her daughter Lisa Kunkle; grandchildren, Amber Kollie (Shawn), Ashley Haworth (Sean), Andrew Barrett, Amy Barrett, Robin Barrett, Nikki Barrett, Katy Kunkle (Nathan Apsel), and Will Kunkle; step-grandchildren, Renee Mize, Patrick Mize, and Stephanie Mize; and great-grandchildren Emerson and Hunter Kollie. Marlene is also survived by her brother, Ron Garris (Carolyn), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Russell Garris and Leona Boice, as well as her brother, Don Garris.

At Marlene’s request, a private memorial service was held at her home for immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or by mail at 31 W. 6th St, Medford, OR 97501.
