John Harold Purcell
April 28, 1943 - July 10, 2016
John Purcell passed away suddenly and unexpectedly July 10, 2016 at his home. Son of Harold and Doris (Isaacson) Purcell, John, known as Jack by family, was born in Portland, Ore., one of three children.
John graduated from Grant High School in Portland in 1961. He received his B.S. from Portland State University in 1966 and his master of science in teaching in 1968. In 1987, he received his graduate studies in school principal from The University of Oregon.
John started his teaching in social studies at North Medford High in September 1966. He was the faculty advisor for several student activities including the varsity rally squad. In the summer, he helped manage the Medford Mustangs baseball team. From 1985 to his retirement in 1998, John served as Assistant Principal at the school capping more than 32 years of service to the district.
In 1980 John was elected a member of the Medford city council and served a four-year term representing the citizens of Northeast Medford. His volunteer service also included many years as a Helpline crisis line volunteer and 13 years working more than 25 hours a week in the local Cancer Society Discovery Shop where he was named Volunteer of the Year in 2016.
John leaves many friends in the Rogue Valley and beyond who will always remember his wit, kindness, and willingness to lend a helping hand. He was loved by many.
He leaves behind his twin siblings, Susan and Gary (Charlotte) Purcell; his nephew, Bryon (Ella) Rain and her son, Ren; niece, Christina (Aaron) Wilder and their children, Emmaline, Elijah, and Olivia, all from Vancouver, Wash.
