John Meenaghan passed away Sunday, September 18, in Medford, Ore. He was born in the village of Shrule, County Galway, Ireland June 8, 1933 to Thomas and Mary Meeneghan (sic). He was their first child and one of six siblings.
John left Ireland and attended nursing school in London, England. There, he met Heather (Rice) Meenaghan. The two left England for Canada in 1960, and were married in Ottawa July 31, 1960. They emigrated to the United States in 1961, settling in the California bay area.
John worked as a nurse at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, Calif. While working full-time, he became an American citizen, and put himself through an A.S. in nursing at San Mateo College, a B.S. in nursing at University of San Francisco, and a master of public health from University of California at San Francisco. He worked his way up to Head Nurse at Sequoia Hospital and was elected President of the Nurse’s Union. In 1976 John accepted a position as administrator at Rogue Valley Medical Center and the family moved to a small farm in Ashland, Ore. In 1980 he became President of Health Future, Inc., and worked in that role until his retirement in 1998. Retirement consisted of traveling the U.S. and Canada in an RV, working as a camp host at Willow Lake Resort, travel to Ireland and Japan, and visits with his family and friends.
John was an active, lifelong member of the Catholic Church and was involved with many philanthropic and service organizations in his life – Kiwanis, St. Vincent de Paul, and most recently, Knights of Columbus. He highly valued education and was particularly proud of the fact that each of his four children earned a college degree. His loves in life were his wife, Heather, his four sons, all things Ireland, especially its music and history, cooking and entertaining, tennis, and cheering for Notre Dame football.
John is survived by his sister, Rita, of Libertyville, Ill.; brother, Martin, of Shrule, Ireland; wife of 56 years, Heather, of Medford; sons, Kevin of Anacortes, Brian of Seattle, Michael of Ashland, and Gerry of Eugene; and grandchildren Sean, Liam, Tyler, Emma, Riley, Arya, and Aemon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary; his brother, Patrick; and his sisters, Mary, Bridget, and Kathleen.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 517 W. 10th St, Medford, Ore. with a reception to follow.
