Patricia Jane Preston
August 16, 1929 - November 2, 2016
Patricia Jane Preston, 87, passed away peacefully November 2, 2016 at Providence Medford Medical Center surrounded by her family. Although some would say she died from the complications of a stroke, there's some suspicion that she was just dying to dance again. She loved to move to music and could occasionally be seen getting into her groove even before she parked her walker at the social events at the retirement complex where she lived. Dancing just moved her soul, and it's nice to think that she's now dancing with the stars and in the arms of her favorite dance partner, her husband, John Preston, who preceded her in death in 2014.
Patricia was born August 16, 1929 to Joseph and Gladys Mackey in Cass Lake, Minn. Her father passed away shortly after her birth so she and her six siblings were raised by her mother and stepfather, Charles Chase. As a young girl she moved with her family to Fair-banks, Alaska and it was there that she later met her favorite dance partner . . . a handsome guy by the name of Johnny Preston. They were the Jitterbug Duo, but it was the slow songs that really brought them together. They were married in October of 1947 and began their family. Their children, Stephen Preston of Lake Oswego, Kathleen Blanchfield of Littleton, Colo., Celeste Stevens, Greg Preston, and Mary Knauf of Medford, all survive her.
Patricia and John moved their family south to Medford, Ore. in 1961 to warm up a bit after those long Alaskan winters. Patricia continued her career in bookkeeping, title and escrow, and finally in banking. At the height of her working career, she opened and managed the Jacksonville branch of Jackson County Federal Savings and Loan. She was also an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served on the St. Ann's Altar Society. Her faith was very important to her and she had many dear friends from her years of involvement.
Patricia loved her children, her 13 grandchildren, and her five great-grandchildren and she loved her home. She was a wise and loving mom and friend to many, and she will be missed immensely.
A memorial service and Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 517 W. 10th Street, Medford with a reception to follow at the Parish Hall next door.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southern Oregon Humane Society Saving Train, or simply smile at a stranger and say hello.
The family would like to thank everyone who was a part of caring for their mother in her final days. Arrangements are in care of Conger-Morris.
