Lawrence J. Figueira

Lawrence J. Figueira, 94, passed away peacefully December 8, 2016 at his home in Shady Cove, Ore. He was born May 31, 1922 to August and Constance Figueira in Oakland, Calif.
He was known as Larry or Fig to his friends. He played softball into his 80s, loved to ride his bike into his 90s, and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Larry married Evelyn Daniels in 1946; together they had three children. He married Mary Ponsiano in 1979; they moved to Shady Cove in 2005 from Lodi, Calif. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Larry graduated Castlemont High School in Oakland, Calif. in 1940. The bombing of Pearl Harbor took place shortly after his graduation and Larry subsequently joined the U.S. Navy January 2, 1942. He served six years of active duty during WWII as an Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class then served his country in the Naval reserve for over 30 years.
He was a devout Catholic, often seen riding his bike to Our Lady of Fatima in Shady Cove for Mass on Sundays or during the week as the weather permitted.
Family meant everything to Larry, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren knew that for sure.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary; children, Danielle (Givens), Ray (Peggy), and Paul (Julie); step-children, Bob Pavao, Cindy (Burt), Judy (Quiles), and Ron Pavao; sister, Irene Haines; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. with Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. December 14, 2016 at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, 52 Williams St. Shady Cove, Ore. He will be interred at 1:00 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul.
