Esther Judson Morgan Giffen
February 22, 1944 - July 1, 2016
Esther Giffen, 72, passed away July 1, 2016 in Kingsburg, Calif. with her loving and devoted daughter, Tirian at her side. She was born February 22, 1944 to Jud and Bett Morgan in Canandaigua, N.Y.
Her marriage to Gordon Grant brought a move to the Ashland Greensprings and life in intentional community where daughter, Tirian was born. She moved down into Ashland for Tirian's school years and met and married Peter Giffen, arborist and landscaper. Their mutual love and respect for the land bonded them.
Esther was well known in the Valley as a gifted masseuse and teacher, loving her work and her clients. She was also an attentive listener and her caring, compassionate presence and wisdom enriched the lives of her large circle of friends. Her generosity kindness, playfulness, classical beauty, and grace made her lovely to be with. She was always ready to have fun and had an infectious, joyful laugh.
In the years after Peter's passing, she moved to Port Orford, Ore. and continued her work as a massage therapist while returning regularly to see clients and friends in Ashland. Following a stroke, she moved to Kingsburg, Calif. near her daughter, Tirian's family. She maintained her love of family, the ocean, gardening, and Native American studies well into her last years.
She was loved and appreciated by many, and her passing leaves a large and aching space in the hearts of family and friends.
Esther is survived by her daughter, Tirian Klein (Stephen); granddaughters, Madeleine and Elizabeth; sister, Laura Morgan; stepson, Ian Giffen; stepmother, Carole Morgan; and half-sister and brother, Victoria Komisar and Peter Morgan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Peter Giffen; and brothers, Scott and Matthew Morgan.
A gathering to celebrate Esther's life will be announced at a later date.
