Jeannette Erna Phillips

January 1, 1917 - April 19, 2017

Jeannette Erna Phillips, 100, passed away peacefully April 19, 2017 at her home at Ashley Manor (Arrowhead) Assisted Living in Medford, Ore.

Jeannette was born January 1, 1917 in Stayton, Oregon to John and Jennie (Van Hemmen) Tjoelker. Her parents emigrated from Holland in 1910 and 1912, respectively. They were married in Chicago, Illinois in October 1912.

In 1919 she, along with her parents and two older sisters, moved to their homestead in Beagle, Ore. While living in Beagle, Jeannette attended elementary school at the Meadows School. Her parents rented a room for her in Medford while she attended and graduated from Medford High School in 1935.

At the outbreak of World War II and the building of the Camp White complex which enveloped Beagle, her family moved to their dairy farm in Rogue River.

Jeannette was active in the USO at Camp White during the World War II years. She worked for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company as a telephone operator where she met her future husband, Howard James Phillips, Jr.

On May 11, 1947 she married Howard James Phillips, Jr. (1920-2001), divorcing in 1966. To that union three children were born, Maureen Gay, Steven Howard and Barbara Jean.

After her divorce she moved to Sacramento, California for several years where she was employed with the State of California. After her retirement she returned to Medford.

Jeannette is survived by her children, Maureen (David) Nott of Oregon City, Steven (Vickie) Phillips of Portland, and Barbara (Rick) Northrop of Eagle Point; and her brother, Henry Tjoelker of Sacramento, California. Additionally, she is survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Hilda Crowell, Cornelia Careaga, Bertha Thurman, and John Tjoelker.

A family graveside service was held at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford.

I am now at peace forever, Safely home in heaven at last.
