Vinton Eugene Pope

April 14, 1926 - December 10, 2017

Vinton Eugene Pope passed away peacefully December 10, 2017 at his home in Medford. He was born on April 14, 1926 in Lakeview, Oregon to homesteader parents, Rolla and Luna (Thorpe) Pope.

As a Lakeview Honker, he participated in band, football, basketball, was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, and was his high school class president. During his youth, he worked as a ranch hand and helped his mother run a boarding house in Lakeview. Upon graduation in 1944, Vint and his male classmates all enlisted in the military. He started training to become a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force. After WWII ended, Vint enrolled at the University of Oregon School of business. He was an active member of the TKE fraternity, graduating in 1950 with an accounting degree.

It was in Eugene where he met and married the love of his life, Audrea J. Plath. They married August 19, 1950. Audrea and Vinton moved to Medford in 1956, where they designed and built their dream home and raised a family. Vint’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, golfing and gardening. He also continued his involvement with the Boy Scouts, serving as Pack leader for several years. He will be fondly remembered as Grandpa Whale for the countless hours he spent in the pool with grandchildren, and for his storytelling. His favorite story was about a pig with three legs. He retired in 1991 from Plumley Logging Company, where he was the office manager. After retiring, Audrea and Vint traveled the U.S., always touring state capitals and playing as many golf courses as possible.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Benjamin and Joseph; and a sister, Edna. He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Audrea; three children, seven grandchildren; and ten great- grandchildren. Son, Ritch (Barbara) of Pleasant Hill, Ore. and their children, Tenley Haaby (Josiah), Bailey Tran (Khoa), and Camron Pope (Emily).
