John Alfred Yungen
December 30, 1921 - December 16, 2017
John Alfred Yungen passed away peacefully December 16, 2017 in his home surrounded by his loving family. John was born to Alfred and Emma Yungen December 30, 1921, the second of three children on a dairy farm in Independence, Oregon.
John grew up working on the farm, but later worked at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington before joining the United States Navy to serve in World War II. After the war he returned to Oregon to attend Oregon State University where he earned his bachelor degree in Agronomy and Soil Science.
He moved to Ontario, Ore. where he worked as a research assis tant at the Malheur Agricultural Experiment Station. It was during this time in Ontario that he met Virginia Haynes. They were married March 14, 1953. At the time of his passing, John and Virginia had been married over 64 years.
John and Virginia moved to Medford, Ore. where John became the Agronomist, and later, the Superintendent at the Southern Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. During this time, he earned his master degree in Agricultural Sciences from Oregon State University. His agricultural research, for the benefit of the farmers in the Rogue Valley, became his life’s work.
John was a faithful member of Eastwood Baptist Church, and served as the financial secretary for over 50 years. He was quiet, respectful of others, and had many good friends.
He enjoyed raising sheep and working outside, and he was especially proud of his family.
John is survived by his wife, Virginia; his children, Steve Yungen (Verna) of Central Point, Ore.; Marilyn Powell (Jim Powell) of Central Point, Ore.; and Tom Yungen (Rosa) of San Diego, California; his sister, Evelyn Elliott of Keizer, Ore.; and six grandchildren, Joseph and Curtis Yungen, Tyler Powell (Kathleen), Katie Powell Ellis (Brad), and Greg and Kendra Yungen.
A celebration of John’s life is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at Eastwood Baptist Church, 675 N Keene Way Dr, Medford, Ore.
